With
the coming of the new aircraft is also the scheduling of shipping them
back out. When an aircraft meets the limits of it’s flying hours, it will
be sent to a depot level maintenance facility to undergo what is called a
re-fit or overhaul. In this case, the aircraft known as 001 was the first
of the UH-60A in Delaware to leave it’s new home for overhaul.
In the past, members of the Army Aviation Support Facility would fly
(Ferry) the UH-1 Hueys to Corpus Christi Texas to undergo an overhaul. At
that point, they would switch aircraft and ferry a different Huey, which
has just gone through overhaul back to Delaware. The UH-1 overhaul program
has not been in existence for around 15 years now. The reason being is
that the Army started down sizing it’s UH-1 fleet and is concentrating its
efforts on newer airframes. In the case of this recent overhaul, the
aircraft 001 was not able to fly to Texas. It’s flying hours along with
maintenance related problems prevented it from being flown to Depot.
Instead, it was loaded on a flatbed trailer and driven to it’s
destination. The replacement for this Blackhawk was flown in from FT. Hood
Texas and has been an active aircraft since it’s arrival 2 months
ago
