OCS Graduation 2002
Delaware commissions eight new lieutenants

Officer Candidate School Class #45 graduated from the 193rd Regiment Regional Training Institute on August 11. The graduating class consisted of 10 members. Eight of the  10 members of the class accepted their gold bars during the commissioning ceremony for their hard work.

On hand for the ceremony was Maj. Gen. Francis D. Vavala, Adjutant General, Delaware National Guard. Vavala was a member of class #14 just about 32 years ago. He offered a few words to the candidates.

"The sky is the limit, and there is plenty of potential in the Delaware National Guard," said Vavala. He also went on to tell the candidates that the management experiences that they have learned are priceless.

The guest speaker on hand for the ceremony was Lt. Col. (ret.) John Rawley (Read his bio>>> ) Mr. Rawley said of his move to the Delaware Guard: "Best move I ever made was coming to Delaware." At one time during the ceremony Rawley turned and pointed to the US flag and told the candidates to defend this.

Awards were presented to the candidates to recognize the hard work and effort they displayed during the program.

Distinguished Graduate Award (The candidate who best demonstrates superior abilities in all the categories they evaluate) The awardee receives the Jefferson Cup, the Army Commendation Medal and a certificate from the State of Delaware for a complete Army Dress Blue Uniform. Andrew Loyer

Not pictured: Capt. Garland Pennington, Outgoing TAC Officer, also received an ARCOM for his distinguished service while assigned to the 193rd R.T.I. Pennington has been appointed commander of the 259th Signal Company.
