Delaware National Guard Direct commission granted for sergeant with previous officer training By Maj. Jane Zak 261st Signal Brigade
On November 19th, Sgt. Randy Graddic received his direct commission as a captain, assigned as the Operations Officer of the 31st Civil Support Detachment (WMD). Capt. Graddic had originally enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1977. After completion of OCS in November 1978, he began his active duty tour as a second lieutenant in Field Artillery. He served proudly as an officer for thirteen years, leaving the service in 1991 as a captain. He then returned to Delaware and started a civilian career at Kraft Foods. It was there that Lt. Col. (Retired) Larry Friend started talking to him about the benefits of joining the Delaware National Guard. In March 2000 he decided that this was an opportunity that he wanted to pursue and enlisted. Sgt. Graddic was assigned to the Message Switching Section at the Headquarters unit of the 28th Signal Battalion - attached to the 261st Signal Brigade S-3 where he served as a Messenger Team Chief until November 2001. In January 2002, Capt. Graddic will resume his career as an officer - assigned as the Operations Officer at the 31st Civil Support Detachment (WMD) (Weapons of Mass Destruction).
