Who is the 721st Troop Command?
By Spc. Laura Drake, 721nd Troop Command

The 721st Troop Command came into existence in the Delaware Army National Guard on December 1. It is not a new unit, but a significant renaming of the former Det. 3, State Area Command (1st Battalion, 72nd Troop Command). The significance of the renaming is that the battalion has its own parent Unit Identification Code, and is now officially authorized its own colors. The lineage of the 1st Battalion, 72nd Troop Command goes back to 1997, when the 736th Supply and Services Battalion was deactivated. At that time, the Delaware Army National Guard created a subordinate TDA to STARC (Det. 3), with about half of the positions of the former 736th.

The battalion, located in Smyrna, supports the following units, which stretch from 60 miles south of Smyrna to 35 miles north: 262nd GS Maintenance Co., and 945th Service Co., C&C, 160th Engineer Co. (CSE), 262 GS Maintenance Detachment, and 249th Engineer Det, (Utilities). With a total of 18 assigned personnel, the battalion staff manages to support these units, primarily in the form of assistance visitations, inspections, and administrative support.

The 1st Battalion, 72nd Troop Command had the following commanders: LTC Robert DelCampo (1997-1998), LTC Terry Greenwell (1998-1999), LTC William Hayes (1999-2000), LTC Charles "Dusty" Rhoads (2000-2002) and LTC Scott Chambers (2002).

The 1st Battalion, 72nd Troop Command had the following Command Sergeants Major: CSM Martin DiSabatino (1997-1999), CSM Gaetano Gravino (1999-2002).
