Dr. R. Michael Gallagher,
recently retired as a colonel from the Delaware Air National Guard, has
been named dean of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey
(UMDNJ) School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, NJ, by the
university’s board of trustees.
Dr. Gallagher joined the faculty at UMDNJ in 1982 as a clinical
professor, and was appointed professor with tenure in the department of
Family Medicine in 1995. For the past nine years, he has served as vice
dean of the school and as medical director of the school’s faculty
practice plan for the past 10 years.
He is a nationally recognized leader in the field of osteopathic
medical education and healthcare policy and administration and an
internationally known expert in headache research and pain management.
As a member of the Delaware Air National Guard, he served as the State
Surgeon and commander of the 166th Medical Squadron. He has 20
commendations during his military career including the Air Force
Meritorious Service Medal (with oak leaf cluster), the Delaware
Distinguished Service Medal and the 2000-01 Outstanding Guard Squadron
Award
