First graders from Jenny Smith Elementary School in Newark presented a unique "paper quilt" depicting each of their family traditions to the Delaware National Guard on February 7. Each student contributed artwork that represented a special aspect of their own family's heritage, origin or ethnicity. By assembling the artwork into one large paper quilt, students creatively captured the class's diversity. They dedicated their project in gratitude to the men and women of the Guard. The men and women in the Delaware National Guard protect their diversity by defending their rights and freedom everyday, said Mrs. Gerri Marshall, a first grade teacher at the school. Col. Louis McCloskey, Chief of Staff, said their work on the project is especially appreciated, because this year is "The Year of Diversity" for the Delaware National Guard. Marshall, assisted by Krista, a first grader at Jenny Smith Elementary, presented the paper quilt to Col. McCloskey and Col. Robert George, Plans and Operations Officer, Delaware Army National Guard. They prominently displayed the students' work in the STARC Headquarters library. Mrs. Welch, another first grade teacher who worked on the project, and the rest of the students were unable to attend. |
