Four soldiers from the 249th Engineer Detachment got a head start on
Valentine’s Day as they married their sweethearts on February 10th – the
first day the unit reported for a year-long activation in support of
Operation Enduring Freedom.
In a public ceremony conducted by New Castle County Clerk of the
Peace, Ken Boulden, Sgt. Frank Gaworski married Beckie Lockwood before
friends, family and fellow soldiers. The two had planned a summer 2003
wedding, but changed plans to ensure Lockwood would be eligible for
benefits available to families of activated troops. Gaworski’s father,
John, attended the ceremony and thought it quite appropriate for his son
to be married under these circumstances. Thirty years ago, the elder
Gaworski’s brother, Francis, died while serving in Vietnam. As a tribute,
he named his son Francis, after that brother.
In another public ceremony, Spc. Richard Houtz and
Brita Botbyl were married by the Rev. Douglas Gilmore. Botbyl is from New
Jersey, but is currently a senior at Taylor University in Indiana. She
made the trip home over the weekend after Houtz informed her of the
activation and they decided to tie the knot. Houtz was a heavy equipment
operator in the 160th Engineer Company, but transferred to the 249th to fill a
vacant plumber position.
Two other soldiers also were wed that afternoon, but in private
ceremonies. Additionally, Detachment Commander, Capt. John Fisher was also
married the previous week.
The 249th will report to their mobilization
station before heading overseas to serve.
