Sgt. Major Charles Donahue and his son, Steven, were recognized by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police at its Annual Awards Ceremony in Baltimore on March 20 for their actions in April 2001. The two were formally presented the Maryland Transportation Authority Police Chief’s Commendation (Citizen’s Award).

Donahue, who is the Operations NCO for the Delaware Army National Guard’s Recruiting and Retention section, was boating along the Susquehanna River when alerted by motorists on Maryland’s Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge of a body in the water. Both father and son retrieved the body, checked for a pulse and contacted 911.

A woman had jumped from the bridge and the Donahues pulled her from the river. They were commended for assisting the Maryland Transportation Authority Police in transporting her from the water to receive medical treatment. Unfortunately, the woman did not survive her fall.
