Red Cross volunteers worked around the clock all last week at the Georgetown Readiness Center receiving and sorting donations of food and clothing for 233 fire victims. A fire on Monday, March 11, left residents of Crestwood Gardens Apartments in Georgetown without their homes or belongings. The Delaware National Guard opened the Georgetown center to store and distribute goods for volunteers from the Red Cross, social service agencies and local church volunteers. Guard personnel assisted in sorting and passing out the clothes and other supplies. "The men and women of the National Guard for three centuries have been assisting the citizens of our state in emergencies, disasters, whatever," said Maj. Gen. Frank Vavala, adjutant general for the Delaware National Guard. "This tragedy certainly classifies as both." Delaware National Guard is proud to offer its resources to help others put their lives back together, according to Maj. Gen. Vavala. "It's simply part of our normal operations... utilizing our resources to help others."
