Warrant Officer Candidate Cheryl Richardson, previously a sergeant first class with 18 years of service in the Delaware National Guard, began her transition into the Warrant Officer Corps in the personnel and administrative management field this January.

She completed the four-week Warrant Officer Candidate School (WOCS) in mid-February. Pending completion of the six-week Warrant Officer Basic Course (WOBC), she will be fully qualified in her new position at the 261st Signal Brigade as the Personnel/Administrative supervisor.

Richardson has been a member of the Delaware National Guard since high school. Richardson said she was looking for a summer job at the end of her junior year and found an advertisement in the local newspaper for the National Guard. After discussing it with her mother, she decided to give it a try and enlisted into the Delaware National Guard as an administrative specialist on her seventeenth birthday.

Two years later she was hired full-time at the 198th Signal Battalion as a clerk for the training section, while attending Delaware Technical and Community College at night – pursuing her degree in the field of nursing. In 1995, she earned her degree as a registered nurse, and since then has worked in that capacity part-time. Richardson has worked as both a medical/surgical nurse and psychiatric nurse at various hospitals in the New Castle County area.

Richardson met the man that she would marry in Guard over seventeen years ago. Richardson has been married to Sgt. 1st Class James Richardson, who is also a full-time member of the Guard currently assigned as the Supply Sergeant at STARC, for over sixteen years. They have two children who are 12-years old and 18- months old.
