James Pernol ![]() Nearly 200 soldiers of the Delaware Army National Guard banged away at targets at the New Castle rifle and pistol ranges, but only a few could bring home top spots in the 44th Annual Governors Ten Rifle and Pistol Champions. For two days, May 19 and 20th, soldiers and airmen used all the shooting stances associated with training to the military standard. "This is the place where safety is paramount, a place where we instill competition, and build morale," said Maj. William Rhoades, state marksmanship coordinator, said. Many of the winners will now make their way to Camp Robinson for regional and national competition. The new American citizen from Singapore said he loves competition. "The field Im in makes this competition an occupational necessity and to be better professionally in this field. Sgt. Robert Breternitz, of Company A., 3rd/126 Aviation, took best shooter in the rifle competition. The veteran shooter said the best part of the competition was not winning, but helping out the other guys on the ranges. Many of the winners now move into additional competition in the regional and national level, which is held at Camp Robinson, Arkansas
