280th Signal Battalion changes command

Maj. Pamela S. Gonce assumed command of the 280th Signal Battalion from Lt. Col. Laura L. Sievert in a ceremony held in the Conference Center at the Bethany Beach Training Site on Saturday, November 16.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries such as the states Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Francis D. Vavala and Brig. Gen. James J. Dougherty.

Brig. Gen. Dougherty cited Lt. Col. Sievert as being the first female battalion commander in the 280th's history, highlighting her efforts to stemming attrition in the unit and supporting numerous family issues.

"We’ve got a busy training year ahead with many challenges", said Maj. Gonce, a 16 year veteran, "We will replace training in Fort Dix, NJ with training at Bright Star, Germany and Korea."

Lt. Col. Sievert received the Meritorious Service Medal for her exemplary performance as the commanding officer from October 1, 2000 through September 30, 2002. Her next assignment will be as the Brigade’s S-3. In her remarks, she thanked the battalion for their hard work and positive responses to a number of challenges.
