Signal soldiers endure weather conditions during November FTX
Story and Photos by Maj. Jane Zak, 198th Signal Battalion

Elements of the 198th and 280th Signal Battalions endured the heavy rainfall and high winds over November's drill weekend and successfully completed their battalion FTX (field training exercise).

The units deployed elements to Bethany Beach Training Site, New Castle County Rifle Range, and Ft. Dix, New Jersey, and installed a tactical communications network utilizing TROPO (Tropospheric Scatter Radio) assets to connect the three sites.

Non-stop rainfall resulted in several inches of mud inside the tents that were being used at the New Castle County Rifle Range.

Spc. Victor Obilie Mante, member of the site quartering party, uses the M256 Chemical Agent Detector Kit to verify that there are no chemical, nerve, blood, or blister agents in the area before the main body arrives.

Sgt. 1st Class David Rush, NBC Staff Non-Commissioned Officer, HHD, 198th Signal Battalion, gives soldiers a mandatory briefing that ensures users are aware that radioactive materials are contained in the M43A1 Chemical Agent Detector and are familiar with safety care and handling of the equipment.
