Wanted: Delaware's Women Veterans

The Women In Military Service For America Memorial, located at the gateway to Arlington National Cemetery, is the nation's only major memorial to honor the some two million women who have served in America's defense. Proudly, some 742 of Delaware's women veterans are individually listed on the memorial's rolls, each of them finally taking their rightful place in history. It is fitting that these women patriots, many of them genuine heroines, are recognized in this way. But who will tell the stories and sing the praises of Delaware's remaining 3800 women veterans who are yet to be found?

The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Delaware is addressing this challenge by working to identify and register Delaware's eligible women. Today, over 4500 women veterans, each eligible for registration in the memorial, call Delaware home. Each of their stories is important and contributes to the collective history and heritage of women's service to the nation. It's time the stories of all Delaware's women patriots are heard.

You can help bring this invisible part of our nation's and state's history to light by registering a Delaware servicewoman, past or present, with the Women's Memorial. Registration forms can be obtained locally by writing to PO Box 4026, Wilmington, DE 19807, emailing scdurgin@erols.com, or by calling 302-652-4033. Or contact the Memorial Foundation at 800-222-2294 or visiting their website at www.womensmemorial.org.

Delaware servicewomen registered through the NSCDA will have a donation made in their honor.

Dedicated in October 1997, the Women's Memorial and its 33,000-sq. ft. education facility, includes an exhibit gallery, never-before-seen artifacts, theatre, gift shop, Hall of Honor and the Register, the computerized home to thousands of photographs, military histories and memorable experiences of America's servicewomen. The Memorial, which is free and open to the public, is open every day except Christmas. While a National Park Service site, the Memorial was built and is operated and maintained by the non-profit Women In Military Service for America Memorial Foundation, Inc. Besides operation of the Memorial, the Foundation's mission is to tell the story of women's service to the nation. The above contact information can also be use to learn more about the Memorial or the Memorial Foundation.
