'Regimental Idol' competition grabs soldiers' attention
By Maj. Jane Zak, 198th Signal Battalion

So, you want to be the 198th Regimental Idol? Better be wearing your beret properly!

In an informal competition at the 198th Readiness Center, Staff Sgt. Elmer Orengo was named September’s "Regimental Idol." Orengo, who was selected by judges from a formation of 24 soldiers, walked away with movie tickets for two at a local cinema and rights to park in the 198th Executive Officer's spot in front of the Armory during the October Drill.

Staff Sgt. Elmer Orengo The 198th Signal Battalion's "Regimental Idol" for September.

Lt. Col. David Passwaters, battalion commander, commented that "This is a fun way to place emphasis on wear and appearance of the uniform and basic soldier skills." It takes a normal inspection, and makes it fun and competitive for soldiers.

The 198th plans to continue this program each month – next month’s competition will focus on the proper wear of tactical field gear, and in November, proper radio procedures.

Who will be next month’s Regimental Idol? Stay tuned to find out.
