Is an online education right for you?
From
Military.com
Online learning is ever more common, but it's still a remarkable concept: access to learning about the widest range of topics-from business management to auto mechanics-from a comparably wide choice of education providers and it usually doesn't matter if you're in Kabul or California .
Not having to be in a classroom has obvious advantages, but there can be some downsides, too. Online classes could be an ideal solution to advancing your education, but nobody should assume that it's an option that's certain to be right for them.
Experts agree that the leading upsides to distance learning are:
Ease Of Access: In most cases, if you have access to a computer, you have access to the class.
Convenience: In most cases, you don't have to follow a college schedule or spend time traveling to and from the classroom.
Time Flexibility: There's no 8 a.m. class or a 1 p.m. class. To be sure, there are deadlines for completing assignments, but students can generally decide when they review the material.
Growth: Opportunities for online learning have increased dramatically in recent years and further growth is expected. As people become more familiar with this way to learn, it is anticipated that it will become that much more accepted as an education resource.
Affordability: Class prices can be lower for online courses than the traditional versions and there are no transportation costs involved.
So, it sounds great so far, but online is not for everyone. Here are some reasons why it might not be right for you.
No Direct Instructor Interaction: If you want or need face-to-face communication with your instructors, you could struggle in the online environment.
Perception: More and more well-known learning institutions are establishing online course, but it remains new enough that there is some skepticism about the value of online education.
Computer Skills Required: Anyone who is not comfortable with computers and not open-minded about new experiences could struggle to succeed.
Limited Interaction With Classmates: Online students often communicate via email, instant messages, chat rooms, message boards, etc., but there usually aren't any sit-down study groups (or end-of-semester parties).
Absence of Atmosphere: Learning is the key component of taking college courses, but the social aspects of being on a campus can be enjoyable and rewarding, as well. There's none of that with online learning.
