Guard Diversity and EEO
NGB VISION: A Learning Organization fully committed to unleashing the full potential of all members, focused on service to customers based upon excellence, open and honest communications, strength in diversity, fully integrated knowledge-based processes, with teaming and collaborative effort at every level.

PURPOSE: "To anticipate and leverage demographic shifts in order to capitalize on the diverse talents of the American people as a force multiplier. The ARNG will recruit, train, retain, qualify, and advance a force which reflects America, acknowledging the contributions of all its members to enhance our service to community, state, and nation."

GOALS: To provide the states, territories, and district with a model as a foundation upon which to build their diversity plans.

OBJ: Develop a broad-based model for use. Maintain NG strength levels that reflect and anticipate changing state demographics.

OBJ: To establish matrices that the states can use to achieve their diversity initiatives at all levels within an organization. Mentoring to qualify future leaders for senior level assignments, which reflect, anticipated demographic shifts. OBJ: Develop and implement formal mentoring process. Communicate and celebrate diversity best practices and challenges throughout the ARNG.

OBJ: Establish a mechanism (e.g., diversity newsletter, Guardnet) that will capture and share best practices and lessons learned. Develop diversity awareness at all levels of the NG.

OBJ: Establish training packages that address diversity, through formal classroom instruction, web based training, distant learning, etc

Guard Training
Typically, National Guard members are required to attend one drill weekend each month and one annual training period (usually 2 weeks in the summer) each year. Weekend drills usually consist of one Saturday and Sunday each month, but occasionally include reporting for duty on Friday night. Initially, all non-prior service personnel are required to attend initial entry training (IET), also known as Basic Training. After Basic Training, soldiers go to their Advanced Individual Training (AIT) which teaches them the special skills they will need for their job in the Guard. These schools can usually be scheduled to accommodate civilian job or school constraints.

Training time is precious to Army National Guard soldiers. That's why the Guard uses many unique training methods. From "real-life" training exercises, like rotations at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California, to high-tech simulation training and distributed learning, the Army National Guard employs innovative training methods to give its members access to high quality training.
