Frequently Asked Questions
Provided by Sgt. 'Trib' Singh, Delaware National Guard USPFO
The following questions and answers are provided for individuals/units
that have returned from Mobilization, and have questions concerning
their pay documents:
Q: I received my LES and it has a debt for insurance/SGLI/Spouse
SGLI/Family SGLI/State SGLI. Why does it show a debt?
A: Even though you are not drilling, or have not drilled
since you have been back, you are still required to pay for your
life insurance every calendar month. If you are not drilling,
or earning any type of military pay during this period, from which
the insurance debt can be repaid, the insurance debt amount will
appear, and increase, until you have military pay from which the
accumulated debt can be repaid.
Q: I received my LES and it has several debts appearing
during the month of April while in theatre, but I was only allowed
to make one draw/advance in April in the amount of $350. Why does
it show multiple debts?
A: The reason for this situation, is because, when you
where in theatre, all the documents regarding advance pay/draws
were sent to DFAS manually to be processed. Your particular paperwork
was part of an entire package of all military personnel, and was
processed accordingly as it was received. Even though you only
took out one draw/advance in April, the previous two draws, occurring
in February and March, were also posted in your April LES, due
to the delay in receipt and processing of the package at DFAS.
Q: I never received back the FICA taxes withheld under
the Combat Zone Tax Exclusion (CZTE) rule. Why not?
A: FICA tax is not eligible for refund under the CZTE
rule.
Q: During my duty I had a change in martial status/dependents.
Do I need to notify finance?
A: Yes. You must provide a copy of your marriage certificate,
divorce decree, (to Personnel Service Branch PSB) and other pertinent
legal documents along with a NEW completed DA Form 5960.
Q: How much leave do I have?
A: Soldiers accrue 2.5 days of leave monthly. Your current
leave balance can be found in the block labeled Leave, look for
ERND (earned), USED, CUR-BAL (current balance) of your Leave and
Earnings Statement (LES).
Q: I was recently mobilized and have yet to received my
Cost of Living Allowance (COLA)?
A: COLA is paid after the completion of the duty month.
COLA is normally one month behind.
