Fulfilling the NCO creed

“No one is more professional than I am. I am a non-commissioned officer, a leader of soldiers.”
The creed of the Non-commissioned Officer (NCO) has inspired many. Staff Sgt. Danny Silva, 262nd General Support Maintenance Company, felt compelled to volunteer as an instructor in the Army Force Generation (ARFORGEN) program due to his enlistment as an NCO.
“I chose to be an instructor, because I feel it is my duty as a NCO, to train younger or new Soldiers,” said Silva. There are many inconveniences in volunteering as an instructor, such as longer hours.
The Pre-mobilization Training Assistors (PTA) and instructors spent two weeks at Bethany beach training center organizing training for the rest of the unit. However, the instructors don’t always have as much time as they’d like to prepare, so coordination is key.
“If you can’t communicate prior to training, mistakes arise. We try to work around that by back-planning,” said Sgt. Jessier Balfantz a PTA instructor. Back-planning is the process of brainstorming what could go wrong and obtaining the resources, or making decisions to prepare for this.
PTA positions are very competitive. You must apply and be selected out of a large pool of applicants. The PTAs trained members of the 262nd to become instructors. “Knowing the materials and becoming familiar with the training tools guided me to helping the instructors,” said Balfantz. The commitment to be an instructor requires a lot of time, however, the instructors have created invaluable bonds with one another.
“We got close to each other,” said Silva. The instructors have an extremely important job that can at times be very stressful.
However all work and no play makes a very dull soldier. So the instructors found ways to de-stress and relax. “I learned how to play Guitar Hero on X-Box,” said Silva.
